 What is The Botanical Ark?

Bot Ark Retreat_-61

The Botanical Ark is one of the world’s greatest collections of tropical ethnobotanical plants (plants humans can use). It grows more than 3,000 species of tropical plants, including fruit, spices and nuts.

It is the lifework of Alan and Susan Carle. Read their remarkable and inspiring stories, including how and why The Botanical Ark is helping save the world’s rainforests.  It’s not surprising that this award-winning ethnobotanical conservation showcase has made many appearances in the media and received accolades from Slow Food International.

Saving the world’s rainforests

How The Botanical Ark is helping save tropical rainforests of the world will be revealed in depth if you do our flagship activity, the Botanical Ark Garden Tour, during your stay. There are also other activities at The Botanical Ark.

Where are Alan and Susan now?

With their children grown up and gone, Alan and Susan live in a home in a private location on The Botanical Ark property. If they are in residence, they welcome a chat with their guests…and because they fund this globally unique rainforest refuge out of their own pocket, some say staying here is like saving tropical rainforests of the world in your sleep.
